Half-Glassed Thinking and Christian Faith

Christians should have known this all along, but many of us are at the mercy of negative feelings. Let me point to just a few biblical statements (there are many more) that lay clearly before us the importance of replacing negative thinking with focused attention to the truths we claim believe, one from the Old Testament, one from the teaching of Jesus, and one from the letters of Paul. (Quotations are from the New International Version.)

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. (Psalm 42:5; see also 42:11; 43: 5)

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. . . Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? . . . So do not worry, saying "what shall we eat?" or "What shall we drink?" or "What shall we wear?" For the pagans run after all these things and your heavenly father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:25, 26-27, 31-33)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things. . . And the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:6-8, 9b).
